Improved Comfort and Air Quality Using Underfloor Air Distribution

2

The use of raised access flooring provides great flexibility in reconfiguring office spaces due to changes in staffing or the introduction of new technology and equipment.  This flexibility is enhanced when underfloor utility distribution is included.  Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) not only increases configuration flexibility but also provides improved air quality and comfort for the inhabitants of the space.
In a traditional overhead air distribution system, the air is being fed from, and returned to, ductwork located in the ceiling.  The flow of air down into the space is met by the natural tendency of warmer air to rise up towards the ceiling.  This creates a turbulent zone where fresh air and stale air are mixed, resulting in lower quality air at the occupants level.  In periods where cooling is necessary, the supply air temperature needs to be lowered significantly below the desired temperature in order to compensate for this mixing and heating. read more

Access Flooring Finish Options

Basic

Having initially been created for use in computing environments, access flooring panels are often thought of as being monolithic and utilitarian in appearance.  However, because of energy savings, improved air quality, and flexible configurations, access flooring has enjoyed ever-increasing use in traditional office environments.  In these environments, floor finishes play a major role in creating the desired look and “feel” of the space and, as such, architects and designers look for multiple options. read more

Raised Access Flooring Design Loads

NewLoadChart-arrows

Raised Access Flooring (RAF) systems need to be designed for the type and amount of loading they will be subjected to.  RAF providers offer numerous options of standard panels and understructure to accommodate the needs of the installation, and custom designed systems are also available for special use environments.  As the load rating on systems increases, so does the cost of production and ultimately the cost to the end user so the goal is to strike the best balance between the demands of the application and the cost of the system.  In selecting the best components, multiple types of loads may need to be considered. read more
